HOW ONE-TOUCH DVIR COMPARES TO ZONAR, SAMSARA, AND WHIP AROUND
These four products all let a fleet meet 49 CFR § 396.11 electronically. They are built for different customers. This page lays the differences out side-by-side, with honest sourcing notes — and a plain-English answer at the bottom on which one is right for your district.
WHAT'S IN THIS TABLE, AND WHAT ISN'T
- The One-Touch DVIR column is canonical. Every cell traces to a single source-of-truth file maintained by Bob McElderry. If you find a discrepancy between this page and the live product, the live product is the truth and the page is the bug — email bob@ramventuresolutions.com.
- The competitor columns are not first-hand verified. They reflect (a) what each vendor publishes on their own current website, and (b) what districts have told us they were paying or experiencing before they switched. Anything that affects your purchasing decision — pricing, contract length, hardware bundle, integration scope — should be confirmed in writing directly with the vendor.
- Snapshot date: May 2026. Vendor offerings change.
- What's missing: KeepTruckin (Motive), JJ Keller, ProTransport, and other DVIR-capable products are not on this table. Inclusion is not an endorsement; absence is not a critique. The three competitors compared here are the three that small rural districts most often name when they call us.

FOUR PRODUCTS. FOUR DIFFERENT ANSWERS TO "WHO IS THIS FOR."
The comparison above looks like One-Touch DVIR wins on most rows. That's only true if you are the customer we are built for. Here's how to actually read it:
If you're a small rural school district (10–50 buses, one to three garages, no dedicated IT staff, tight budget, supervisor wears six hats): the table reflects a real cost and complexity difference. One-Touch DVIR was designed for this exact profile. The other three were not.
If you're a 200-bus district with a fleet manager, integrated telematics, and a multi-year procurement cycle: Zonar or Samsara are probably the right fit. The hardware bundle that looks like a cost penalty on this table actually delivers value at your scale — engine diagnostics, route optimization, geofencing, driver scorecards — that One-Touch DVIR doesn't try to deliver.
If you're a small commercial trucking operation (not school bus): Whip Around is probably worth a look. We're not built for over-the-road commercial use.
This page exists because Transportation Directors keep asking us how we compare. The honest answer is: we are the right tool when you are the right customer for it. If you're not, we'll tell you that directly.
THINGS WE DELIBERATELY DON'T DO
- Native iOS / Android apps in the public stores. We are a PWA. Drivers add the app to their home screen via a link. If your district policy requires app-store-distributed software, we are not the right fit.
- Telematics, GPS tracking, engine diagnostics, route optimization. Not in scope. We are a DVIR product, not a fleet management platform.
- Multi-tenant district networks. Each garage is its own deployment. If you want one dashboard across multiple districts in a regional consortium, we don't offer that yet (Phase 6 of our roadmap; target Q4 2026).
- AI features inside the inspection workflow. Deliberately no. The studio uses AI to ship faster; the product is deterministic on purpose.
- 24/7 phone support. You'll get Bob, usually within a business day. If you need follow-the-sun enterprise support, we don't offer it.
These are not bugs. They are the boundaries that let us charge $20/driver/month sustainably. A product that tries to be everything to everyone cannot be $20/driver/month and still work.
WHEN TO CHOOSE US. WHEN TO CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE.
Choose One-Touch DVIR if:
- Your fleet is 10–100 buses, one to three garages.
- You're a school district, ideally in the Pacific Northwest (we'll deploy elsewhere — Washington is just where the founder lives and where Larry is).
- You don't have a dedicated IT department to administer enterprise telematics.
- Your annual budget for fleet inspection tooling is in the low five figures, not six.
- You want to know the founder's name and reach him directly.
- You're switching from paper, or from a tool that costs more than it delivers, or from a tool that bundled DVIR into a telematics package you don't need.
Choose a competitor if:
- You're a 200+ bus operation with integrated telematics needs.
- You require a native app distributed through public app stores.
- You require multi-year contract structure for procurement reasons.
- You require enterprise SLA-backed support.
- You're a commercial trucking operation, not school bus.
If you're not sure which bucket you're in, email bob@ramventuresolutions.com. We'll tell you honestly. Sometimes the answer is "we're not the right fit for you, here's who would be better."
READY TO COMPARE US AGAINST YOUR CURRENT QUOTE?
Send us a redacted copy of your current vendor's most recent invoice or quote (cover up anything sensitive — we just need the line items and unit pricing). We'll send back a side-by-side cost comparison using your district's actual fleet size, not a generic table. No obligation. No salesperson. Just numbers.
